. "As for me, I care about you, my brothers, I believe that you are particularly rich in the highest kindness, the rich knowledge and the ability to advise each other." Romans 15:14 [Williams]

Jay Adams did not use scientific discovery to determine the ability of Christians to provide counseling. His method is presupposed because he publicly accepts the unmistakable Bible as the standard of all faiths and practices. In addition, he admits that his interpretation and application of the Bible is not absolutely reliable. Moreover, he does not want to ignore science, but to use it as an appendage to the truth of the Bible. The first chapter is a good illustration of the state of modern psychiatry. He pointed out that "any kind of recommendation is only considered by the Minister as a last resort. It is considered to have some meaning." [p. 19]

Since counseling is the work of the Holy Spirit, it is necessary to seek His guidance to be effective. [John 14:16, 17; Isaiah 9:6] "The Holy Spirit is with us." Counselors and those seeking lawyers must also respect the sovereignty of the Holy Spirit. "[Page 22] The textbook of a Christian lawyer must be the Word of God.

Adams reminds us that the Bible will be organic, mainly problem-based, and those that stem from sinful attitudes and behaviors.

After the three chapters of "Introduction", Adams defined "abnormal counseling" in his fourth chapter. "Jesus Christ is the center of all true Christian counseling. Any counseling that moves Christ from this point has reached the point that it is no longer a Christian." The whole church, not just the minister , to carry out specific confrontation. [Colossians 3:16; Romans 15:14] "Nouthetic" is a transliteration. The translation of Greek words includes: admonish, warn, teach. The nouthetic confrontation has three elements:

1] "Brings a problem and presupposes an obstacle that must be overcome; there have been some errors in the life of the betrayed."

2] "Resolve problems through verbal means."

3] "Verbal correction is intended to benefit individuals seeking a lawyer. [pages 44-49]

Think of these: 2 Timothy 3:16; Colossians 1:28; 2 Timothy 4:2; 2 Corinthians 11:29; 1 Timothy 1:5.

Nouthetic Counseling qualifications:

  • Kindness and knowledge - Romans 15:14
  • Wisdom - Colossians 3:16; Proverbs 1:7

After dealing with many other issues, Adams completed his book by discussing "Christian School Teachers as Nouthetic Counselors." "Christian teachers [not counseling experts] are the key to school counseling. More effective counseling than self-styled experts." "Like other Christians, Christian teachers can take advantage of all the resources of God: the Bible, prayer, and the Church, in the Holy Spirit. Background." [p. 252]

Classroom is the ideal environment, and every day there is a system of punishment and reward, under the power of God, the most productive time of the day. Deuteronomy 6:7 and ll:19

Adams made a good statement about his situation and reminded Christians to believe in the Holy Spirit to guide this important work.
