Paragliding fast decline technical review

  • Every "ear" should be discarded one at a time, not together. This is debatable, but since the main danger of pulling into the ear is an increase in the angle of attack [due to the steep speed of the glider], the glider is closer to the stall point.   • In this case, the wind gradient is your enemy. As the wind speed increases, you are likely to use large ears, but lowering the wind speed by lowering the wind gradient will result in deep stalls, which can be considered by increasing the angle of attack. A low level of deep stall is very dangerous because you don't have time to recover. Similarly, the speed bar can help prevent deep stalls, but keep in mind that the danger is the closest to safety.
  • Don't pull out your ears. In the past, this technique was taught at school [with brakes to withdraw from the big ears], but now it has lost its credibility. Pulling the brakes will further increase your angle of attack and bring you closer to a gear. To quit, simply release the a line and let the ears unfold. On some higher performance gliders, the ear may stay inside, so if you are flying on a DHV 1/2 glider before flying, please read the manual.
B line stall

This operation is only for good heights [at least over 500 feet] and should not be used close to the ground. The danger is that the glider will not recover and enter deep stall. To restore deep stalls, you should use some speed bars, which will lower your angle of attack to the normal range of flight, but at low levels, this may not be an option. Spiral diving

Spiral diving is also a rising method of descent, not a low landing. The spiral is very disoriented and may turn black due to the g force involved. Another danger is locking, the wing does not appear without the pilot input [or it may actually tighten when the brake is released], which combined with the directional obstacle and the descent speed may mean a big one. In theory, entry-level gliders should get out of the spiral quickly and automatically, but recent evidence suggests that this is not always the case, in part because of variables such as pilot height, weight, center of gravity, and whether you are using cross-supported seat belts.

All in all, Big Ears is the safest low-speed flying fast drop technology, and the B-line gear is the most useful for advanced flight. None of the above techniques should be tried for the first time when you need it, but there is a rehabilitation boat in the SIV course at school or on the water.

The main danger of any of these technologies is ignorance, especially for large ears, where the pilot often fails to keep abreast of the latest developments in the sport and often does not perform correctly.
